Emily M. Miller: Glitter Your Wagon!
I used 4 ounces each of: Chunky Opaque Hologram #251 Comet, Ultrafine Opaque #291 Fire Engine and #140 Canadian Blue (my favorite stars and stripes blue!) and Ultrafine Transparent #85 Crystal. You will have left overs, but you need this much when working with large pieces because so much falls off while sprinkling (or pouring!) on. Which brings me to material #2: Newspapers, lots of newspapers to work over and catch excess glitter. The other materials, acrylic paint and masking tape and paint brushes. I did the body of the wagon first just to get it over with! Paint one section at a time the color of the glitter you are using and spoon on the glitter while the paint is still very wet. Keep going until one side is done. You have to use several newspapers and I suggest glittering outside in the early morning before any wind picks up. While waiting for a side to dry move onto a slat. Start painting and glittering the red and blue wood first and set aside. Keep working back and forth between the wagon body, wheels and slats until all the opaque glittering is done. Then go back and do the white paint/Crystal glittering till done.
I believe I got this done over a period of three mornings, (made it in 2007). To make it easier and quicker, I had three paint brushes for each of the opaque colors so I could make spot corrections as needed. It was actually fun and lasted quite a while. I tried to keep it out of the weather, but with two kids dragging it around it has been weathered again, but still looks great at a distance!
Here it is all done up for my little town's 4th of July kid's parade. And here are the boys in their red, white and blue get up. We only took third place, stiff competition that year!
